Virginia L. Hood

Virginia L. Hood, MBBS, MPH, FACP, an internist and nephrologist from Burlington, VT., is a Regent of the American College of Physicians and 2008-9 Chair of the Ethics, Professionalism and Human Rights committee. She is a professor of medicine at University of Vermont College of Medicine and an attending physician at Fletcher Allen Health Care with clinical, teaching and research responsibilities.

She cares for patients with end-stage renal disease, renal, blood pressure and fluid and electrolyte disorders. She teaches acid-base physiology, epidemiology, ethics and internal medicine to medical students, residents and community physicians. Her scholarly activity has included basic science research in acid-base metabolism, clinical research in lactic acid and ketoacid metabolism, health promotion research in diabetes prevention and outcomes research for blood pressure control.

She has been an active Fellow in the American College of Physicians, being Governor of the Vermont Chapter from 1999-2003, serving on several national committees including Publications, Ethics Professionalism and Human Rights, Nominations, Awards, International and Scientific Programs as well as the ACP Foundation. In 2003, she received a Laureate award from the Vermont chapter. She has been a member of the Board of Regents since 2005.

    A medical graduate of the University of Sydney, Dr. Hood completed residency at Mater Misericordiae Hospital in North Sydney, Australia. She completed two years of fellowship training in nephrology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and her third year of fellowship training at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, USA. In 1993 she received and MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. She is certified in internal medicine and nephrology and has been a Fellow of the American College of Physicians since 1991.

    The American College of Physicians was founded in 1915 to promote the science and practice of medicine. In 1998 it merged with the American Society of Internal Medicine, which was established in 1956 to study economic aspects of medicine. ACP works to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care by fostering excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine.
